After many months of preparation, seeing images of the paintings on screens and in print and seeing the paintings themselves at the mill before they were hung, what struck me immediately when I finally saw them at the opening was how comfortable and natural the paintings looked in their surroundings at the mill, as if the mill was built to house them.
The vibrant colors and spontaneous brushwork of the paintings contrasted and complemented at the same time with the natural materials of the mill — wood, stone, plaster — rich with age and more than 200 years of history and use, both highlighted and enriched by the natural light streaming through the windows. The new and the old living together as if meant for each other, both timeless. The paintings which depict so vividly the landscapes of the valley housed in this historic valley mill.
The mill and the paintings, a perfect marriage, different, yet the same, at home, welcome you in and share their secrets. Jeff Lefkowitz
